Site Assessments are often required where the location of the collection facility has not yet been determined. There may be several candidate sites to evaluate or there may need to be a process of narrowing down options to find an optimal site. There are numerous considerations to evaluate during a site assessment process such as:

City of Elk Grove, CA
Reviewed three possible sites for the development of a new HHW collection facility. Evaluated the use of the preferred site on a former industrial property. Developed approximate sizing of the HHW collection facility footprint to accommodate traffic flow and integration of customer-friendly drop-off area for hard-to-handle or high-volume solid wastes and recycling materials. Site planning included reserving part of the property for future uses and allowing space to meet local zoning and emergency access requirements.
Mesa County, CO
Reviewed plans for expanding an existing HHW facility on the same site. Involved integration of a new building into existing operations, orientation of materials flow inside the structure, and modifications to building design. This resulted in a more effective and economic design than originally envisioned while still meeting all code requirements and maximizing operating flexibility.

Coos County, OR
Evaluated two potential sites for a new HHW collection facility at an existing solid waste transfer station. One site would involve new construction on bare ground and the other site involved repurposing a former incinerator ash decanting and storage building. In both cases considerations for other waste management activities, efficient traffic flow, facility operating objectives, and anticipated customer volumes were integrated into the site selection process.
